It houses one of the most prestigious magic schools in the world and owns one of the most diverse collections of magical tools and books collected over hundreds of years. Having basic understanding of magic is considered a given, though not everyone has the ability to use it. Most people on Cre are incapable of using magic beyond a very rudimentary level, thus the magic charm industry is quite thriving. This isn't to say that those with the ability to cast magic and powerful magic are rare, it just takes a particular type of talent and hard work in studying.
The technology level of Cre is somewhere between Victorian and Edwardian (1890s - 1919) though magic replacing steam and electricity. Crann is the most developed of the countries having a monopoly on most information, as well as encouraging mages from around the world to move there both for school and job opportunities. The state gives great incentives to researching mages especially if they decide to work for the government. Due to this Crann has one of the most prestigious militaries with the highest number of mages enlisted than any other country. However Crann is on rather good terms with its neighbors and things are generally peaceful.
Eolas is Crann's magic school, which resides in the city of Crann na Haithne. Crann na Haithne was built around a great giant oak tree, large enough to house the magic school (which houses thousands of students, class rooms and research laboratories. Think a regular large campus). It is one of the oldest and most important cities in Crann. It is equal to the capital Crann na Ndeithe where the royal court resides and most nobility live.
Crann is a monarchy with a council of lords and then a council of representatives. The council of lords are the heads of noble families charged with the duty of advising the current king or queen and giving suggestions, only a few families are deemed worthy of such a status. Most lords are part of the council of representatives which is there to address concerns of the common man who live in each lords domain. Large cities that lack in a single ruling lord instead have their mayor attend this instead. The city of Crann na Haithne doesn't have a lord or mayor, instead of the head of the Eolas acts as the head of the city and works directly under the Imperial Adviser of Magic. Generally affairs of magic are handled by mages and the current ruling monarch is only casually involved.
Mages in Crann are highly competitive and can be rather secretive. They like to hoard knowledge and only share it with proven disciples and apprentices, or create elaborate tests to deem one worthy of succeeding their knowledge. Ira the Book of Words is a good example of this, as the book will only choose a master that meets specific requirements, though what those exactly are no one is sure. Such items of knowledge and power with requirements are hoarded and selected individuals will be put through a test to hopefully unlock them. Crann currently holds within its borders 5 such artifacts, 2 have been assigned to individuals, one is locked up deemed dangerous, one is currently deemed stolen, and one is going through selection process.

As a bastard child his best option (and the one he had assumed would pass) was to be sent off to a boarding school far away, and then be given a respectable job of a lords bastard, usually a bureaucrat, banker, or lawyer or some kind. Of course with no actual obligation to him he could have been turned to the street, but generally any aristocrat and even anyone wealthy will at least set up such a child with education and a career as it was the respectable thing to do and showing appearances was very important.
However Tyrnens assumptions of boarding school and a job afterward were dashed the day he went to meet his father about his future. Tyrnens mother had a strong affinity for magic and Tyrnen himself shared this as well. Instead of sending Tyrnen away somewhere as a bastard child his father decided to adopt him properly into the family, and audaciously put him as the second son over his younger half-brother. With this he then sent Tyrnen to Eolas to learn magecraft.
While attending Eolas as a prank Tyrnen was locked in one of the library vaults, unable to get out he started wandering around looking at the different books and items, while doing this he ran across The Book of Words picking it up and looking at it. However The Book of Words housed a sentient spirit who manifested themselves in front of him as a beautiful young woman just as Tyrnen was about to place the book back down. The fright from such a thing startled him so badly he ended up throwing the book at the apparition, which caused the book to become angry and attack him. In defense Tyrnen cast his own attack spell at the same time managing to counter it. The Book of Words was so impressed by this reaction (or possibly just amused) that it decided to make Tyrnen it's master right there and forced a contract between them.
While suddenly acquiring The Book of Words Tyrnen continued his studies with no one the wiser. Not long later he's assigned a partner in his studies; the school had a policy to pair up students who were strong in each other’s weaknesses. Since Tyrnen was strong in offensive magic but lacked in his defensive skills he was paired up with another student who was strong in defensive skills and lacked in offensive. The school hoped in this way that they would learn from each other and thus become more well-rounded mages. Tyrnens partner, Aiden, ended up becoming Tyrnens friends and they started to get to know each other.
However the disappearance of The Book of Words was going to catch up to Tyrnen pretty soon by this point. There was a ceremony held every year of the most promising students in the country, the ceremony was to give The Book of Words a master, a feat they had failed to be able to do for over 200 years. When they went to retrieve The Book of Words and found it missing alarm bells rang. It didn't take long to track down the culprit, a student in the school, and then further track down that it was Tyrnen who currently possessed the book. To those in charge it didn't matter that the book chose him, he wasn't an ideal candidate (one that aligned with their ideals or was easily manipulated). With his life on the line Tyrnen fled the school hoping to figure out what he could do to make himself not a criminal and on a wanted list with a bounty. However he really didn't have much knowledge of the outside world and wasn't sure what to do, in the end he just focused on not being caught.
Meanwhile back at the school they were organizing hunt parties to track Tyrnen down. Aiden, Tyrnens friend, volunteered for one. Once they tracked Tyrnen down Aiden cast a spell to put them all to sleep to protect Tyrnen, his reason for joining the hunt party was to find Tyrnen which he was having a hard time doing on his own. Once reunited they worked together to form a plan and journey forth on an adventure.
Personality:
Tyrnen generally comes across as aloof and disinterested in others. He can also have a sharp tongue and spew rather biting sarcastic remarks. Though he comes across as cold and standoffish he's really just shy and doesn't know how to deal with people well. He doesn't want people to get to know him so he puts up a front. Though he is the sort of person to not suffer fools very well. Due to these things he seems like the sort who's annoyed all the time.
But, once you get to know him you see that he's pretty naive, and easy to tease. A lot of things will go over his head and his reactions can be fun to some people. A lot of these more innocent and naive sides to him manifest more and more as he's on his journey, encountering new situations he doesn't know how to handled
Though Tyrnen is completely capable of being polite, cordial and everything a proper noble should be, he tends not waste the effort. He did it for his father, for his siblings, for his tutors and for most his teachers at school, however students who came upon him outside of class never got that side of him. He tended to be more sarcastic or blunt in those situations usually with the intent of running people off. This wasn't so much because he's a grouch, or even grumpy as much as he isn't good with dealing with others his own age, or really others much at all. It's easier for him to avoid people and read than it is to socialize, even if he has all the skills to pretend like he can. But this side is not all of him; he is still young and has much room to grow.
Due to his family circumstances Tyrnen tends to try and appear more adult than he really is when around adults, trying to be serious when it is appropriate to be so, not indulging in frivolities and staying focused on the matters at hand. However, this is easier attempted than accomplished. He can easily be distracted and it's not that hart to get him to play around, Aiden is especially good at this. When he is comfortable with others it's easy to see a young easy going and rather naive boy. But to those he just meets he tries to put up the front of a stern and hard person, as if a shield against attacks. Generally it just makes him come across as easily annoyed and grouchy.
Tyrnen values intelligence and knowledge above all else and will be disdainful of others who do not value those principals. The worst offenders are those who do not value books and do not read. In situations where he is "suffering fools" he is more prone to sarcasm and will pull "status", even if status has no bearing on where he is. Despite him being a bastard son he was still raised in an affluent environment and his father is also a high ranking noble, he also is well aware that he is rather talented in magic and won't hold back to use these two things to his advantage.
Where he holds great contempt for the ignorant he holds great respect for the informed. If someone is knowledgeable in something he will question them eagerly, those with stories to tell he will listen with open ears. Those willing to teach especially he will be drawn to and if they are good he will do what he can to be a student of them. If he likes the person enough it doesn't even matter what they teach, he will try it at least once. Once Aiden won his friendship he obediently listens to him, though still grumbles a bit when told to practice protection magic.
He is quite aware of his abilities and knowledge, he will never brag about it, but he will correct people if they assume he doesn't know something he does. Most the time he will wait for people to fail before saying anything though, because he's the sort of person that likes to say "I told you so" or at least sit there while his face says it all.
Tyrnen has a soft spot for those in need, if he witnesses suffering he will want to fix it. Even in situations where he can do nothing he will feel a type of guilt and sadness. Bad situations will leave him slightly depressed for a while and he has a specific fondness for children and animals. Even if it means risking himself he will not ignore someone in need once he's seen them.
Tyrnens relationship with Ira the Book of Words is rather interesting, it's half instructor, half friend of sorts and not considered a tool at all. He respects it and admires it, though won't admit it, and feels more or less comfortable with it. However since it likes to pull pranks it's hard to be truly comfortable. He will even ask it suggestion and opinions about matters he is unsure of. However most the time it is indifferent and will leave him to make his own choices. The only times he will usually get suggestions and advice is when it comes to magic, it is a magic book after all and that is where its specialties lie.
As for Tyrnens relationship with Aiden it's that of a close friend. At first Tyrnen was reluctant and didn't like the idea of being paired up with someone, however Aiden is very easy going and friendly, and he’s also very persistent, because of this Aiden broke through Tyrnens shell and forced himself into his life. Once that was accomplished Aiden was a very valued friend. Their relationship almost seems like a brotherly one; Aiden is even teased for acting maternal towards Tyrnen, who has gotten to the point of just doing whatever he's told if it's Aiden that tells him.
Abilities:
Tyenen's magic combat is rather extensive. He knows quite a bit of combat magic including area of effect skills. However the larger the area the longer it takes to prep and the stronger the magic the longer it takes. Quick fire spells are not as powerful and require more of them to defeat an enemy. He is really a character best suited to being behind others. However due to one of his unique skill of utilizing the symbols of base elements that power a spell he is capable of casting quick spells quicker than most. This is why he's best with offensive magic.
The most unique thing about him is his magic aptitude, he was borne with it and it was always high, he is not limited to one or two elements (as a lot of mages usually are, they will have an affinity for one element over another), but can use several, though he is still a student and not all of them come easily to him. His best are Water, Air, and fire. His worst are Earth and wood as they are generally the foundation of protection magic. He is also rather skilled with none elemental magic. However skilled is a loose term as things he is skilled with are easier for him to cast from memory, he is still what would be considered a student and is far from a master at anything, he is a child prodigy.
Quick fire spells are spells that do not require an incantation, or can use simple words to trigger. They can either be quick projectiles or quick defenses or bindings. A properly trained mage can cast stronger magic quicker; however Tyrnen is still young and despite his education still needs more hands on experience. Tyrnens specific method of casting quick spells is to draw out the symbol of the base element with his finger while casting the spell, usually a few words for the incantation or even just one word as his fingers draw out the rest as he moves.
However, his access to spells is not limited to what he's learned or memorized, the reason for this is The Book of Words which is a repository of spells written by mages over several thousand years. Tyrnens contract with The Book of Words allows him to access the content of the book either through recitation or through channeling. Channeling is a difficult process and recitation requires him to be able to read the spell. It's more difficult to cast a spell based off recitation alone and takes a lot longer. Also a drawback of recitation is that if the scroll, paper or books were taken away from him, or he was prevented from reading while casting the spell would dissipate unfinished. Learned spells on the other hand only need the users’ concentration to cast and when properly memorized and mastered take little effort to execute.
Learning spells is hard and time consuming, it should take three or so days to learn a new spell enough to cast it, it will take longer to cast it effectively. A lot of the spells he has access to he does not properly know, so his pool of knowledge on specific spells drops dramatically if he is not in possession of the Book of Words.

Still it was really strange, it wasn't a magical item but it acted like one in a way. What he had figured out was that it was a method for communication; the only issue was he wasn't sure what to say. Wasn't it a bad idea to just announce yourself without knowing anything? But looking at the other things showing up on it, it was probably his best option.]
Good day, I am Tyrnen and I have newly arrived to this [It took him forever to try and word what he was trying to say just right] place. [He was really lacking.] I'm not really sure what to make of it and any sort of help would be greatly appreciated. Am I safe in assuming this is a school of some sort? I feel like I'm in some sort of other world so it's a bit confusing.
[He had to offer something, no one would just help a stranger without an incentive. But what did he have? He had nothing....]

Exposition/Introspection:
Where was he...? He felt groggy, like he had been bespelled by something. That feeling when an enchantment is wearing off.... Wait, did that mean he had been enchanted!? The adrenalin rushed through him waking him up further, he was starting to now see his surroundings, he was clad in black with others clad in black as well. He had the vague sense that up until now he had been chanting, but why? What was the point? He couldn't cast spells. As he thought about this he could hear the chanting around him, the more he listened and looked around the more of the dim room came into focus. There was a magic circle below him, a crowed of students around him. He could spot a few others who seemed a bit bewildered. But Tyrnen felt more than bewildered or confused, he was scared. Beyond scared, terrified.
Why am I doing magic if I can't cast magic?
What was it that they were trying to do? It couldn't be any good... the set up was just... it chilled him. He didn't need to have his magic, or know the magic they were doing now to know that it was dark frightening magic. The fact he didn't know exactly how frightening it was made it all the worse. He wanted to bolt out of there right now, and yet, those other students waking up from the enchantment.... If no one spoke up... if no one said anything.....
He swallowed hard and took a deep breath.
"Please follow me, if we leave quietly I'm sure it will be fine," be calm, be gentle. It took a lot to speak up, but if he didn't no one else probably would either. He couldn't just leave them. What if lingering just allowed the enchantment to come back? "We can worry about what's been going on once we're out of here."
Though he didn't want to think about it, something somewhere deep inside told him the less he thought about it the better things would be. If only he had Ira around, that stupid book would probably love to speak up about its thoughts on the matter. Or even Aiden, though no matter what he didn't want to wish his friend here. That guy was always best when in a bright mood; Tyrnen didn't want to think about him in such a terrifying place.
He shook his head to chase the thoughts away and instead of focusing on things he had no control over, he started ushering the other students who had woken up towards the door. He could at least do this much....

He will even ask it suggestion and opinions about matters he is unsure of. However most the time it is indifferent and will leave him to make his own choices. The only times he will usually get suggestions and advice is when it comes to magic, it is a magic book after all and that is where its specialties lie.
As for Tyrnens relationship with Aiden it's that of a close friend. At first Tyrnen was reluctant and didn't like the idea of being paired up with someone, however Aiden is very easy going and friendly, and he’s also very persistent, because of this Aiden broke through Tyrnens shell and forced himself into his life. Once that was accomplished Aiden was a very valued friend. Their relationship almost seems like a brotherly one; Aiden is even teased for acting maternal towards Tyrnen, who has gotten to the point of just doing whatever he's told if it's Aiden that tells him.
Abilities:
Tyenen's magic combat is rather extensive. He knows quite a bit of combat magic including area of effect skills. However the larger the area the longer it takes to prep and the stronger the magic the longer it takes. Quick fire spells are not as powerful and require more of them to defeat an enemy. He is really a character best suited to being behind others. However due to one of his unique skill of utilizing the symbols of base elements that power a spell he is capable of casting quick spells quicker than most. This is why he's best with offensive magic.
The most unique thing about him is his magic aptitude, he was borne with it and it was always high, he is not limited to one or two elements (as a lot of mages usually are, they will have an affinity for one element over another), but can use several, though he is still a student and not all of them come easily to him. His best are Water, Air, and fire. His worst are Earth and wood as they are generally the foundation of protection magic. He is also rather skilled with none elemental magic. However skilled is a loose term as things he is skilled with are easier for him to cast from memory, he is still what would be considered a student and is far from a master at anything, he is a child prodigy.
Quick fire spells are spells that do not require an incantation, or can use simple words to trigger. They can either be quick projectiles or quick defenses or bindings. A properly trained mage can cast stronger magic quicker; however Tyrnen is still young and despite his education still needs more hands on experience. Tyrnens specific method of casting quick spells is to draw out the symbol of the base element with his finger while casting the spell, usually a few words for the incantation or even just one word as his fingers draw out the rest as he moves.
However, his access to spells is not limited to what he's learned or memorized, the reason for this is The Book of Words which is a repository of spells written by mages over several thousand years. Tyrnens contract with The Book of Words allows him to access the content of the book either through recitation or through channeling. Channeling is a difficult process and recitation requires him to be able to read the spell. It's more difficult to cast a spell based off recitation alone and takes a lot longer. Also a drawback of recitation is that if the scroll, paper or books were taken away from him, or he was prevented from reading while casting the spell would dissipate unfinished. Learned spells on the other hand only need the users’ concentration to cast and when properly memorized and mastered take little effort to execute.
Learning spells is hard and time consuming, it should take three or so days to learn a new spell enough to cast it, it will take longer to cast it effectively. A lot of the spells he has access to he does not properly know, so his pool of knowledge on specific spells drops dramatically if he is not in possession of the Book of Words.

[Tyrnen still wasn't quite sure what to make of the cellphone; he'd messed with it and looked at it enough to get an idea of what it was supposed to do. Still it was really strange, it wasn't a magical item but it acted like one in a way. What he had figured out was that it was a method for communication; the only issue was he wasn't sure what to say. Wasn't it a bad idea to just announce yourself without knowing anything? But looking at the other things showing up on it, it was probably his best option.]
Good day, I am Tyrnen and I have newly arrived to this [It took him forever to try and word what he was trying to say just right] place. [He was really lacking.] I'm not really sure what to make of it and any sort of help would be greatly appreciated. Am I safe in assuming this is a school of some sort? I feel like I'm in some sort of other world so it's a bit confusing.
[He had to offer something, no one would just help a stranger without an incentive. But what did he have? He had nothing....]
Of course I don't expect help for free, I understand that much, I will do what I can to offer compensation, perhaps there is something I could assist you in if you assist me in this matter?
Exposition/Introspection:
Where was he...? He felt groggy, like he had been bespelled by something. That feeling when an enchantment is wearing off.... Wait, did that mean he had been enchanted!? The adrenalin rushed through him waking him up further, he was starting to now see his surroundings, he was clad in black with others clad in black as well. He had the vague sense that up until now he had been chanting, but why? What was the point? He couldn't cast spells. As he thought about this he could hear the chanting around him, the more he listened and looked around the more of the dim room came into focus. There was a magic circle below him, a crowed of students around him. He could spot a few others who seemed a bit bewildered. But Tyrnen felt more than bewildered or confused, he was scared. Beyond scared, terrified.
Why am I doing magic if I can't cast magic?
What was it that they were trying to do? It couldn't be any good... the set up was just... it chilled him. He didn't need to have his magic, or know the magic they were doing now to know that it was dark frightening magic. The fact he didn't know exactly how frightening it was made it all the worse. He wanted to bolt out of there right now, and yet, those other students waking up from the enchantment.... If no one spoke up... if no one said anything.....
He swallowed hard and took a deep breath.
"Please follow me, if we leave quietly I'm sure it will be fine," be calm, be gentle. It took a lot to speak up, but if he didn't no one else probably would either. He couldn't just leave them. What if lingering just allowed the enchantment to come back? "We can worry about what's been going on once we're out of here."
Though he didn't want to think about it, something somewhere deep inside told him the less he thought about it the better things would be. If only he had Ira around, that stupid book would probably love to speak up about its thoughts on the matter. Or even Aiden, though no matter what he didn't want to wish his friend here. That guy was always best when in a bright mood; Tyrnen didn't want to think about him in such a terrifying place.
He shook his head to chase the thoughts away and instead of focusing on things he had no control over, he started ushering the other students who had woken up towards the door. He could at least do this much....
