Canon Background: here
AU Background:
Eiki is a being from the the land of the dead, a Yama who is given the role of judging the dead on the deeds they committed while alive. She has existed for longer than she can say, and the old records speak of her role, but newer records speak very little of her. In modern days many of the living confuse her place with the demons of Hell and forget there was a judge before any other step. Many of them instead assume their god to be the decider of their fates. Eiki does not know if their god matters in how she will judge them, but she will judge all who go through her court equally regardless of race, family or religion.
She is a favored judge known for her steadfastness and refusal to retract a sentence. She is also known for her lenience and has been given a lot of rewards for her good service, such as her Cleansed Crystal Mirror and her current positon.
Personality: Eiki is about as neutral as a person can be when it comes to the events around her. She is generally friendly and optimistic however just because she is friendly with you does not mean she will be favorable to you later. It doesn't matter who you are in relation to her, she will judge you the same as everyone else. This does not win her friends, but she does not feel a need for them. She has a role and she will uphold it as best she can.
She has a strong sense of justice, and once she is aware of a wrong she will pursue it until it is fixed or she feels there is a positive change. This can be a good and bad thing, as when she has time she will hound those who are "black" until they change their path, but at the same time those who listen will find their afterlife a better place. This coincides with her goal of an afterlife where no one needs to suffer, but it is a goal that is near impossible to achieve.
Eiki is a stickler for rules and will follow them to the letter. However she is also a being who is allowed to act on her own discretion, generally this means she can make her own decisions about a situation and take what she feels is the best path. But this also means that she will interpret a rule differently depending on how she feels about a situation. To some this may seem unfair, but to her it would be unfair not to consider the situation at hand on an individual basis.
When judging others Eiki has a tendency to be harsh, yet speak her harsh words with a smile. She will embellish on the punishments a person will receive after they die and how bad off they are. Yet you could not call her a liar for it. Though they are exaggerated they are within the spirit of the truth and are only spoken as a scare tactic.
Despite the fact she can be harsh and once she has made a decision will not change her mind, she is very lenient. Employees under her care are given multiple chances even when they mess up, souls that another judge might sentence to a tougher fate she might give a lesser sentence to. Though her decisions may not look it they really are much kinder than others.
Combat Style: Eiki does not fight, she is capable of it but prefers not to. However if she is required to she has a tendency to summon up various rods to send at people, or expel powerful magical lasers. Since she is a being from another plane of existence she is able to hop around at will, back and from from the land of the dead and the land of the living as well as locations. She is also gifted with the ability of flight and a strength stronger than her frame would imply.
As one who govern overs the dead she has various abilities that co inside with that role. Mostly to do with life spans and knowing the sins of others. However, without specifically looking them up she won't know the details. What she can do however is see in Black and White, which is not to be confused with Good and Bad so much as positive and negative. So she is able to quickly judge a person based on their kharma debt.
Generally she does not use her powers unless absolutely necessary (though she does judge people in black and white all the time), though does use a single rod known as the Rod of Remorse to punish people when appropriate and to use as a weapon.
Kingdom or Faction: The Netherworld; active
Primary Role: Magistrate; Judge
Soldier or Siege Company: N/A
Tarot Cards:
Past: Temperance
Present: Justice
Future: Wheel of Fortune
Title: Supreme Judge of the Afterlife, Supreme Judge of Hell, Judge of Paradise
Artifacts: Eiki has a special mirror that aids her in her duties as a judge of the dead, as well as a rod known as the Rod of Remorse.
Item: Cleansed Crystal Mirror
Properties: A polished crystal and silver hand mirror about a foot or so wide, it has ornate carvings on the back side. It reflects the sins of a person and can their true self. All sins are revealed and it can even force a person to face their sins. either metaphorically or literally. It's a very powerful object but very difficult to use and costs a lot of energy.
Potential Plot Hooks: It can reveal the truth about a persons past, or even make them face a wrong they did in the past. It could symbolize a coming to terms with ones self and moving on or any other sort of inner struggle. It can also allow Eiki to know things that would be beneficial for fair judgment.
General Intent: Eiki uses it exclusively as a tool for judgment and nothing more, mostly it aids her in reading the sins of a person back to them.
Item: Rod of Remorse
Properties: It is a wooden rod that will take on the weight of a persons sins when their name placed upon it. It is indestructible and as long as it carries the name of the person it is hitting it will always be the most heaviest thing they have ever felt.
Potential Plot Hooks: One could realize the extent of their sins.
General Intent: It's a punishment tool, but Eiki has little reason to hit people who are still alive, still there are times when she may need it and has no qualms using it. However when using it on living people it is never truly at full weight.
Setting Considerations: Higan and the judgment system.
All souls when they die see a judge, judges are appointed by the Ten Kings but little is known about them. Judges are not demons and they are not gods so much as, something different. Though for mortals they might as well be gods. They preside over judgment on all creatures considered "alive" and with the potential to die. They use a bureaucratic system filled with paperwork and rules and do not have much to do with the rest of the aspects of the afterlife other than the fact they are the "processing" facility. Once they have judged a soul and sent it on, it is sent on to the fate of those who govern those worlds. They are also the ones that govern over the individual life spans, dispatching agents to collect souls that are past due, but they do not kill nor do they orchestrate death. (Though there are always rogue systems but as long as they are under the allotted limit they are tolerated.) They are simply an aspect of the natural cycle, though people have come to make assumption on their own.
